Kübler-Ross stages of death model applied to accepting life and inconvenient truths
While ruminating on our drawn out collective suicide, the thought occurred to me that what prevents people from accepting alternative viewpoints is essentially that which prevents them from accepting death. Why?
The Kübler-Ross stages of death model is an explanatory framework to understand people coping with the fact that they will die soon, usually they are terminally ill, and are going to die in an untimely fashion. When a person is told they are going to die, they are said to pass through the following stages by the Kübler-Ross model: Denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and then acceptance of the inevitable. How does this hold up if we apply it to ideas dying? It occurred to me that death not only happens to people, but to ideas, neural networks are shattered and wither and erode in the face of contradictory evidence whether we like it or not.
Lets take 9/11 for instance. If I was to tell you there was compelling evidence that the official narrative of events on that day were false, your first reaction (as was mine), would be to deny it, as it does not fit into your understanding of the world. It is not compatible with what I knew and thus was immediatley rejected, there was no receptor that I had for this information, like throwing uncooked spaghetti at a wall and hoping it will stick, it had nothing to cling to, to welcome it in. I was in complete denial as it ran counter to most of what I had been led to believe about this supposed benevolent system of which we are apart.
Immediately you get angry at the person who is telling you that your worldview is dying, maybe even mad at what some call “god”. Because it hurts, (note that the same region of the brain that is active when in physical pain is active with emotional pain). Your synapses are being severed and unravelled, and going through the birth canal of knowledge is no easy task. It literally hurts to have to reform your perspective. Growing pains etc.
You may think to yourself “oh that guy is just crazy” which is just rationalization, a more complicated form of denial called bargaining, it’s a defence mechanism that ensures you do not become depressed/ distressed upon acknowledging reality. One last attempt at salvaging your life, or your ideas. You make up all sorts of excuses with the help of all which you have been indoctrinated to believe, anything but accepting how little power you actual have, and the fact that you got screwed. The ramped individualistic narcissism in our society is another major roadblock to accepting that we were wrong, there is too much self-esteem at stake.
Once you realize that anger, hostility, and ad hominem attacks will no longer suffice in bringing back those convenient neural frameworks you were accustomed to you get depressed. Perhaps its a more innocuous depression within the example of the death of ideas, not someone moping around in a housecoat self-loathing, but perhaps a looming disinterest in fake ass shit or anhedonia as its referred (the inability to experience pleasure). Acknowledging ones alienation from the world or ones oppression (that they were fundamentally wrong can be saddening), this is what our bodies are naturally trying to prevent from happening with the knee-jerk reaction of denial, it knows that this phase is right around the corner. It is stressful and the mind avoids stress proactively/ unconsciously in this way. No one likes to know they got duped. People get proud for all the wrong reasons nowadays.
Over time your mind and physiology will adapt to this new world view. Your mind is reshuffled, and the deck is now firmly back in its box, all things that correspond to that idea are updated and tweaked, the pain is gone, and your mind returns to heightened homeostasis. Acceptance here is not to be confused with acceptance of your enslavement, rather accepting that you are in fact enslaved. This will create a ripple effect throughout your brain, affecting all of your prior understandings, right down to the moral core. A domino effect of knowledge, and necessarily so, as its implications in the 9/11 example given are that extensive.
Now if you did not have to endure these stages in order to accept that you have been lied to, then you likely are too open minded, its one thing to be in denial out of fear of getting depressed, its another altogether to simply accept anything you are told just because it runs counter to the mainstream, which is essentially what caused the problem. If you consider yourself a “truth seeker” and have not endured the progression in this model at some point then I would doubt the competency of your views as much as that of someone who was too fearful of their bodies negative physiological reactions and simply deny everything yet can step on someone in a second if it entails a new car.
After acceptance you die, or the ideas die
What determines your actions after acceptance (whether it be to take action or comply), or what happens after you die is the real mystery... Its arguable that if you claim to know about these things yet remain silent, or feel that its not worth talking about, that you are still in denial, if not now a full fledged complicit member of mindfuck inc. Perhaps you don’t truly comprehend the significance of these things, its also quite possible that you have learned to be helpless, in realizing that such a powerful force rules you with an iron fist, you simply accept the prodding as a necessary side effect of living, while going on about the benefits like a hostage in the thick of Stockholm syndrome. The truth is if you have never had to suffer in your life, or if you are averse to suffering, you will never get a sniff of real truth, you fear your own potential sadness. LOL! You may get the job, the title and the condo to comfortably progress through Kubler ross stages of dying model while the nurse wipes the undigested caviar from your asshole, you will never have lived motherfucker. Never. Wise up and get critical before you get terminal.
Hence the phrase
