New program amalgamates geotagged photos into "augmented reality" matrix

Can Startup Bubbli Turn Geotagged Photos Into Matrix-esque Augmented Reality?

BY KIT EATONWed Feb 9, 2011

Startup Bubbli just raised $2 million in funding from August Capital, which will help it in its mission to build "the Matrix (minus the sentient AI)." What's it all about?

Bubbli's home page is mystical, to say the least. It really does say its mission statement is to build the Matrix, but there's a string of text that gives us some big clues: "Take a look in your pocket," it suggests, "You probably have a smartphone. You're looking at something that governments used to pay millions of dollars to launch into space. You presumably launched your device into your back pocket for merely a few benjamins." So we know this is smartphone-centric. But then the text goes on:

While you were out shopping: Thousands of brilliant papers have been published in computer vision about understanding the world around you through a camera chained to a workstation in a basement. The algorithms need to be set free. Why liberate the algorithms? The better we understand reality through a camera lens, the better we can replicate it elsewhere. After all, our eyes are just light sensors, what does it matter that the light that goes into your eyes is reflected off of an object from the sun or comes from a digital display? The company is trying to recruit three programmers, including a computer-vision expert, and will soft launch at the upcoming TED event.

Bubbli's site has resulted in some speculation online thanks to this mystery, and the fact that some of the site's support has come from John Doerr, who injected massive amounts of cash into Twitter--a venture that has done pretty well. Doerr noted he'd seen Bubbli, and thus had "seen the future."

But what can we infer from Bubbli's site? It seems the firm is planning something pretty impressive. Bubbli has realized that when all of us, by the million, snap photos and videos (by the billion) of our daily events, we're recording a rich digital story of the world--with accurate GPS locations, angular information and digital compass data (in some cases), so that it's possible to work out precisely where the images were created.

Visa to force you to carry cell phone at all times to go into debt

FROM FAST COMPANY

Visa to Use Your Phone's Location to Prevent Credit Card Fraud

Sure, you like all the great benefits of having your phone know where you are. Looking up directions or local weather information becomes that much faster. But outside companies and agencies are equally delighted to have access to your location information--and not just to send you coupons. Increasingly, they’re going to be using that information for purposes that have nothing to do with your convenience and fancy.

Some of those purposes you’ll like. Others you might not be so keen about. One you’ll probably be okay with was just announced by Visa Europe. The credit card company is going to start using information about the location of customers’ mobile phones to prevent credit card fraud.
Visa Europe has partnered with a company called ValidSoft that can establish whether your mobile phone is in the same place as the merchant or ATM where your card is being used. The assumption is that if the two devices are in close proximity, it’s probably you using the card, even if you’re far afield from your usual stomping grounds. If the two devices are not in the same place, the system may send up an alert.

Proximity information will only be one of a number of variables the system will use to assess the likelihood of fraud during any particular transaction. The companies say the system will both reduce card misuse and cut down on the number of “false positives.” That, they say, will create a better experience for users when a particular purchase deviates from their expected patterns--no more annoying calls or locking your card up when you're simply on vacation--and it will cut down on case-management processing costs for card issuers.

Smartphone app monitors every move (literally)

Smartphone app monitors your every move

CAN'T be bothered to tell your Facebook friends what you are up to? A smartphone app called Jigsaw can help.

Jigsaw figures out what you are doing by monitoring your phone's microphone, GPS and accelerometer for patterns characteristic of routine activities - and it could be set to send the results to social networking sites.

More importantly, Jigsaw can log how active you are each day, producing records that could be useful to a doctor or fitness trainer. Its pattern-recognition algorithms can identify a range of behaviours, making its logs more detailed than those of similar apps, says Hong Lu at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, who developed the app in collaboration with the Nokia Research Center in Palo Alto, California.

For example, the jolts produced when the user is walking depend on whether the phone is in a trouser or jacket pocket, so the software can recognise both patterns. Information from the other sensors helps to further define the activity.

The less active you are, the less often Jigsaw kicks in, so it can capture your activity patterns while minimising the drain on the phone's battery. "If you're stationary there's no point in getting regular GPS readings," says Lu. He adds that a smartphone running Jigsaw in the background would get 12 hours of use from the battery, so you can log your behaviour from morning till night on a single charge. "Without smart power management it would drain the battery in 6 hours," Lu says.

'Goldman' says technology will run your life (CNN)

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) --
Your smartphone will run your life

Today, one in five Americans owns a smartphone -- but give it just a few more years and the gadgets will be ubiquitous.

Your smartphone will run your life

By 2015, smartphone ownership will surpass 80% in the U.S., up from 17% of the population today, research firms Frost & Sullivan and Forrester Research estimate. Worldwide, 1 billion people will own smartphones in 2013, according to a forecast from Informa Telecoms & Media.

Smartphone sales are already outpacing those of PCs, Gartner's research shows, and a number of analysts predict that by the end of the decade they will be the primary point people use to stay connected.

"These devices are becoming the center of our lives," says Will Stofega, analyst at IDC. "Smartphones are bringing an immediacy and an availability of the Internet that has changed and transformed the way people access information. They're the first thing we pick up right after our car keys, and they're changing our behavior."

That new connectivity wave is reshaping the tech field. A boom in hyper-personal applications opens up huge growth opportunities for new business models -- and might wash out some of the industry's current giants.

If experts' predictions come true, the tech world could look quite different in the next five to 10 years.

A 'you' device
PCs and laptops can be shared among multiple family members or coworkers, but a smartphone is the one connected device that is truly yours. That makes it very, very personal.

Already, the typical smartphone user is downloading hundreds of applications to customize their device -- and stuffing it with personal data. Apps store passwords, health information, financial transactions, daily calendars, to-do lists and detailed e-mail trails, plus games and vast entertainment libraries of books, movies and music.

Electronic searching aid for parents: Kidfinder

FROM PHYSORG

Electronic searching aid for parents October 1, 2010

Just a short call and the "Kidfinder" lets you know where your child is right now via SMS. It can be built into a game console and the locating unit even combines GPS position fixing with GSM tracking. In the best-case scenario, it can even locate the person sought within a couple of meters.

Now where’s that Toby? The eight-year-old was supposed to be homehalf an hour ago. Not to worry. His mother goes to her phone, calls her son’s “Kidfinder”, gives her password and gets an SMS with Toby’s position data. She can see from the coordinates that her youngest child has taken a little detour to the brook and while playing in the water he forgot what time it is. The Kidfinder is different from exclusive cell phone locating systems because it not only uses the GSM grid (global system for mobile communications) for mobile radio, but also the global positioning system (GPS) for determining Toby’s position.

Carsten Hoherz from the Fraunhofer Institute for Reliability and Microintegration in Berlin, Germany, explains that “This combination of GSM and GPS provides reliable localization regardless of whether the person sought is outside or inside of a building.” If the child is on the move outside, it can determine his or her position via GPS to as little as five meters. GPS position fixing with several satellites works with substantially greater precision than localization via GSM because it only gives away what mobile radio cell a user is in at the present moment. On the other hand, mobile radio reception is only possible inside of buildings while GPS signals generally cannot penetrate through walls or the roof. This is the reason why GPS localization precision drops dramatically in urban jungles because of signal reflecting.

Originally, the scientists at the Fraunhofer Institute for Reliability and Microintegration came up with their  pocket-sized GSM/GPS system to localize freight or cars. These units have the same technology for these applications. On the one hand, they are somewhat larger and heavier, which means that they have more space for higher-performance antennas and storage batteries. On the other hand, the developers ran up against certain limits with the Kidfinder because they did not want them to be too heavy for kids so that they would carry them voluntarily. This is why they came up with the idea of combining the locating unit with a portable game console because, as Hoherz explains, “Children prefer carrying something like that around with them to  some extra piece of equipment that isn’t of any use to them.” Kidfinder is not much bigger than an open matchbox and weighs less than 80 grams. It’s a real lightweight and fits perfectly into the spare slot of your common or garden-variety game console. What’s more, its storage battery has a capacity of 400 mAh which is enough for two days of operation. Finally, it can be charged with the console. The localization module offers the option of expanding the scope of the console’s function by providing local information for ground games.

Haitians forced onto the grid: Cell phone banking

Mercy Corps Mobile Money Turns Phones Into Wallets for 100,000-Plus Haitians

The international aid non-profit Mercy Corps does not shy away from innovation--the global development agency announced this week that they are bringing mobile financial services to Haitians without bank accounts in a new initiative and partnership with Washington-based Trilogy and Haiti's Unibank. That's on top of their earlier feat this month of deploying just five water treatment systems to Pakistan that managed to serve thousands of people.

Mercy Corps has rolled out mobile banking during other emergencies, but they've often involved long lines for payments at a set time with no flexibility. Plus, people walk away with paper money that can easily be lost or stolen. Instead, "Mercy Corps is using mobile money in our cash-based programs in the Central Plateau and Lower Artibonite regions of Haiti--running cash-for-work programs, offering cash grants and vouchers....," Mercy Corps' spokeswoman Joy Portella tells Fast Company. "Mobile money is easier--people receive the money on their phones and can withdraw/store money when they want to, and the security risks are far lower."

Local Haitians like that the program is discrete and private and just between the participating institutions. “It’s a very good way of paying people because it’s very discrete, people don't know your business--it’s between us, Mercy Corps and the bank," said Haitian program participant Sylmanie Prophete, 27. UniBank and wireless carrier partner, Voila, want to expand the network to include leading banks and their customers.

"What's innovative is the ability to use mobile phones not just as a way to receive payments, but as a way to "store value"--so people can spend some money from their phones in stores/merchants, and they can also keep money on their phones so that it serves as a "wallet." This is the foundation for using mobile phones as a vehicle to receive and manage a range of financial services in the future," says Portella. "Hopefully, people will eventually use their phones as bank accounts, and to receive and send money to loved ones. For a country where most people don't have a bank account but almost everyone has a cell phone, that's an exciting possibility."
