SCVNGR Unleashes Zombie Horde Through Social Check-In Feature
By Michael Andersen   October 27, 2010  |  9:54 pm

Geo-locative troublemakers at SCVNGR have unleashed a zombie apocalypse on poor, unsuspecting smartphone users. What will you do to guard yourself from infection this Halloween season?

By Michael Andersen, originally posted at ARGNet

Geo-locative check-in app SCVNGR has pulled off some crazy stunts in the past few months. Modernista used the app to lead Dexter fans to a kill room set up at Comic-Con in San Diego, and the New England Patriots used it to help nose tackle Vince Wilfork recover his Super Bowl XXXIX ring.

But this time, SCVNGR has gone too far. It’s unleashed zombies.

Or at least, zombie badges. Just in time for Halloween, SCVNGR has infected 10 SCVNGR players with a Zombie badge. Once infected, these hapless souls will be informed of their sad state, and are doomed to wander the streets, spreading the infection.

The transmission vector? SCVNGR’s new social check-in feature, where players can earn points by bumping phones together. Normally, engaging in unprotected bumping lets players earn points, with the rewards increasing based on the size of the group. When a player bumps with a zombified SCVNGR user, all the users in the group become infected with the zombie badge.

Mobile indoor GPS cummin soon

Picture

From popular science shills

Our GPS-wielding smartphones have made it somewhat difficult to get lost, say, on the way to the museum. But if you’re waiting for the day your phone will also help you navigate to a specific painting once you’re inside, you might be waiting a while. The technology exists, but no single version is perfect. And a lack of a standout Indoor Positioning Systems (IPS) technology means there is no broad agreement on which technology should become the new standard.

Several IPS technologies have been unveiled over recent weeks and months, and like GPS they rely heavily on radio signals. But radio signals aren’t well suited for location sensing indoors – architectural features and modern construction materials distort radio waves at every bend and turn, literally.

There are two prevailing philosophies in IPS development, neither of which solves that problem. Received signal strength (RSS) requires devices to know the strength of a radio signal at its origin, measuring the signal’s drop in intensity by the time it reaches the receiver to figure distance. Using two or more signals, devices can triangulate their positions. The other tech – time of arrival, or ToA – does roughly the same thing but instead reads time stamps embedded in signals to calculate distance from a transmitter, much as GPS does.

GPS copulation control: Dating sites integrating tracking programs for "users benefit"

With new GPS dating apps, it's love the one you're near
(CNN)
-- There are many reasons people fall for each other: Personality, looks, humor -- sax-playing ability. But a new class of GPS-enabled smartphone apps is trying to bring dating back to the pure, data-driven basics.

Latitude and longitude.

In this new era of app-driven love, location is most important.

Take, for example, the story of Scott Kutcher and Amanda Segal. They started dating in March when, during a Jay-Z concert at Madison Square Garden, Scott pulled out his iPhone, opened an app called Skout and scanned a list of near-by women.

A grid of photos showed women who, at that very moment, were within a certain radius of Scott and his GPS-enabled phone.

And at the top of that list: Amanda, who was at the same show.

"It just so happened she was the closest one and she's cute," he said, noting that the app told him she was less than 1,000 feet away.

Scott and Amanda exchanged instant messages through the app. Amanda thought Scott was funny. She also liked the Ninja Turtles hat he wore in his profile picture. So the pair agreed to meet up for coffee after the show, and Amanda brought some of her friends along, just to be safe.

"He could have been a serial killer," she said. "I lucked out."

The two are now dating exclusively, and they credit the love-the-one-you're-near philosophy of Skout with setting them up.

Above all, it was convenient, they said.

"I wasn't going to go out of my way -- at all. I really wasn't," Amanda said of her willingness to search out a person to date. "I was like, 'Oh we're at the same place, why not discuss the show?'"

While established online dating services like eHarmony andMatch.com go to painstaking lengths to match daters based on their exhaustive surveys of likes and dislikes, this new crop of GPS-based dating apps seems fixated largely on two qualities in potential mates: Proximity and convenience.

Apps like Skout, Grindr and StreetSpark let people sort through lists of potential daters based on where they are located at any given moment. All three services list the distance between the person using the app and other member users in feet.

If a person is listed as zero feet away, for instance, you might glance up from your seat at a coffee shop to see that person hanging out across the room. The apps tend not to say exactly where a person is located, and, on Skout and Grindr, you can turn off the location-aware feature if you choose.

Most of the apps rely on instant messaging as a way to break the ice before a real-world conversation takes place.

On these apps, users keep minimal profiles -- much less detailed than those you see on Facebook or MySpace. The main bits of information users are given about each other are photos, which are featured prominently, and locations, which usually are listed in the number of feet between you and the person whose profile you're searching.

Children to carry GPS beepers in war on sex crimePosted Wed Jul 28, 2010 7:37pm AEST

South Korea will give school children GPS-embedded beepers as part of a trial to stem a wave of brutal sex crimes against minors.

The beepers are designed to warn police of dangers and activate surveillance cameras.

About 1,200 elementary school children in Anyang City, south of Seoul, will receive the beepers in a test run from October.

The ministry of public administration and security says authorities will then consider adopting the system nationwide.

Each child will be able to use their matchbox-sized beeper, fitted with GPS technology, to activate any nearby cameras and alert parents and police via mobile phone.

The government has strengthened monitoring of elementary schools after several crimes against children.

Police last month arrested a 44-year-old habitual sex offender for kidnapping an eight-year-old girl at her school in southern Seoul and raping her.

The National Police Agency has announced a plan to launch investigative units nationwide to tackle such crimes and declared "war" on child molesters.

Marines to use autonomous vehicles built by Virginia Tech engineering students using TORC products

IMAGE: The Marine Corps Warfighting Laboratory worked closely with Virginia Tech and TORC in the creation of the four Ground Unmanned Support Surrogates (GUSS) that will be used for their ability...

Four unmanned autonomous vehicles designed and built by a team of engineering students at Virginia Tech using the TORC Robotic Building Blocks product line, are headed to Hawaii to participate in the 2010 Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) war games in July.

Fourteen nations, 34 ships, five submarines, more than 100 aircraft, and 20,000 personnel will participate in the biennial RIMPAC exercise June 23 through Aug. 1.

The Marine Corps Warfighting Laboratory worked closely with Virginia Tech and TORC in the creation of the four Ground Unmanned Support Surrogates (GUSS) that will be used for their ability to support a platoon of U.S. Marines.

The unmanned vehicles can carry up to 1800 pounds and can move at the speed of a troop on foot, or about five miles per hour. The vehicles are designed to re-supply troops, to reduce the actual loads manually carried by Marines, and to provide an immediate means for the evacuation of any casualties in combat. A Marine unit will operate GUSS during the Naval Laboratory's enhanced company operations experimentation that coincides with RIMPAC.

Virginia Tech and TORC, a company founded by alumni of the university's robotics program, http://www.torctech.com/ share a very successful track record on their collaborations. Together, they developed autonomous vehicles for the Urban Challenge competition sponsored by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) in 2006 and in 2007. "The focus of the collaborations is to leverage the research capabilities of the university with the commercialization capabilities of a small business," said Al Wicks, professor of mechanical engineering (ME) at Virginia Tech and faculty advisor to the team. http://www.me.vt.edu/people/faculty/wicks.html

They took home third place honors in 2007 when their vehicle completed DARPA's 60-mile course in less than six hours, with no human intervention allowed past the starting line.

The four GUSS vehicles headed to Hawaii are an outgrowth of the technology developed for these DARPA competitions, Wicks said. The sensors have been greatly improved, as well as the perception, planning, and control algorithms to navigate complex environments.

The Urban Challenge featured a cooperative environment with well-defined roads for the competition. When the GUSS vehicles are used by the Marine Corps in Hawaii, they will be "off-road and not in a cooperative environment," Wicks said. "This is a big step forward in autonomous vehicles."

Michael Fleming, a Virginia Tech ME graduate and the founder and chief executive officer of TORC, explained the team synergism, saying "I believe our team of government, academia, and industry all working together has provided the Marine Corps with a well-balanced solution."

As an example, existing algorithms developed by students under previous TORC/Virginia Tech partnerships, were used to create a customized version of the TORC AutonoNav (autonomous navigation system) product to provide the advanced off-road tactical behaviors required to meet the needs of the Marine Corps Warfighting Lab.

The rapid development and experimentation on the GUSS project was made possible through the use of TORC's Robotic Building Blocks product line, said David Cutter, marketing manager at TORC. This enabled Virginia Tech engineers to leverage off-the-shelf technologies and focus on system integration challenges. The entire development process was completed in less than a year, with the first prototype delivered for testing in six months. The additional three vehicles were produced in the next five months to be shipped to the RIMPAC exercises.

GPS finds new crowd-control and medical applications By JUDY SIEGEL-ITZKOVICH
06/06/2010 06:44

A Hebrew University researcher has shown that GPS can control crowds or the movement of shoppers, and even evaluatE patient recovery after surgery. Global positioning systems (GPS) have become commonplace to help drivers reach their destinations using satellites. But a young Hebrew University of Jerusalem researcher has shown that GPS can have other uses as well, such as controlling crowds or the movement of shoppers, and even evaluating patient recovery after surgery.

Michal Isaacson, a doctoral student working with Dr. Noam Shoval of HU’s geography department, has been involved in developing new approaches for the use of advanced tracking technologies. Her work has implications for understanding the activity of people in different settings, such as urban areas, shopping malls, theme parks, national parks and other tourist attractions. It has already been tested to evaluate crowd activity and flow at Spain’s Port Aventura theme park.

For her research, Isaacson has been named the first-prize winner among students in this year’s competition for HU’s Kaye Innovation Awards at the Hebrew University.  The prizes will be presented on June 9 at the university’s Board of Governors meeting. Her work in this field has resulted in a book coauthored with Dr. Shoval and in several articles published in leading geographic journals. The first article she coauthored, published in The Professional Geographer, was noted by the journal as one of the top five most-cited articles in 2006 to 2007.

The system she and Shoval have developed uses GPS technology to record the location of people for a designated period of time. During this period, participants are required to carry a small GPS unit with them. The tracking data is then analyzed using a computerized, time/space analysis engine, to derive maps that indicate the volumes of activity throughout the location and charts that indicate how different types of populations spent their time in the location.

The data obtained using tracking technologies can also be analyzed in real time, creating virtual “radar” of the activity of visitors throughout a destination. Real-time analysis can lead to dynamic management of attractions in a more efficient way, both expanding the number of people that can visit an attraction within a given time frame and controlling their flow to promote sales. The analysis of this data can also change the way attractions are planned, and enable effective planning of future additions to an attraction.

The technology also has far-reaching medical applications, they say. In collaboration with Dr. Yair Barzilay of the HU-Hadassah Medical School and Hadassah University Medical Center’s orthopedic surgery unit, a method was developed for detecting the mobility of patientsafter surgery as an objective measure for their recovery and well-being. The patients carry a GPS unit with them after the operation, tracking their movements, which are then analyzed. Future development will integrate additional sensors that will allow the combination of GPS data with physiological data, such as heart rate and blood pressure.

The system was recently licensed through Yissum, HU’s technology transfer company, to Location Based Intelligence Inc., a US company, for further development and commercialization in the medical arena. Defining the potential market for this invention in the field of medical application is difficult at this stage, mainly because this product is creating a new market.
