LOS ANGELES (CNN/KABC) - Kids in the school lunch line can point to what they want to eat, and point to pay for it too.
A school in Los Angeles is trying out a "finger scan" system. The students place their finger on the pad and it scans a partial fingerprint.
School officials say the print is then discarded and replaced by a numerical number to identify a student for the school year. The district hopes the technology will save money, speed up cafeteria lines and eliminate the problem of forgotten lunch money.
The principal at the first school to use it says it also masks which students pay for their lunch with subsidized meal tickets.
"When people knew that they were on free or reduced lunch, especially at the high school level, no one wanted anyone to know, so sometimes they would not eat. But the great thing about it is that everyone can eat now. Everyone does eat, and they feel good about eating," said Yvonne Edwards.
