Facebook Can Hunt Down Your Face in Any Photo Now

Facebook knows what you look like, and the implications are staggering. Drawing on billions of labeled photos, the social network will now automatically recognize faces and suggest people to tag in photos you upload. That's probably just the start.

Under the new feature, Facebook will compare faces in photos uploaded by users to "tagged" pictures in its existing database. If it gets any matches it will suggest names to attach to the new photos. A company executive tells CNET the new feature is actually a privacy enhancement, since getting tagged will alert you to "a photo of you on the Internet that you didn't know about... you can remove the tag, or you... can write the person and say, 'I'm not that psyched about this photo.'"

Right, sure. Of course, you probably won't be so psyched.

Computer software which can identify unnamed faces and then collate photographs of that person is to be released to the public amid concern among privacy campaigners.

The programme works by scanning the relative positions of the eyes, nose and mouth and claims to be accurate in nine out of 10 cases.

It can then search the internet for further images of the same individual and, in tests, unearthed untagged photos which had not previously been seen by some of the people in them.

The managers of Face.com, which created the software, told the Sunday Times that 5,000 developers were already using it.

Gil Hirsch, its chief executive officer, said: "You can basically search for people in any photo. You could search for family members on Flickr, in newspapers, or in videos on YouTube."

Such software has previously been the domain of Governmental organisations such as the UK Border Agency or inside social networking platforms.

Proponents of the technology said it could enable families to unlock their history or trace those lost in humanitarian disasters such as the floods in Pakistan.

The Information Commissioner's Office said there were no legal restrictions on the use of facial recognition software.

However, Simon Davies, of Privacy International, said: "The regulators have been hugely behind the curve on protecting people's privacy on the internet. We need to push for much tighter international rules."

Cutting-edge cameras will scan drivers' faces and check them against a crime database as they enter car parks, it emerged last night. 

NCP, which is trialling the system at 40 sites, hopes it will help identify potential car thieves. 

But privacy campaigners reacted with fury, saying the technology could criminalise innocent people. 

Britons are already the most watched people on the planet, with each of us caught on camera an average of 3,000 times a week. 

That will increase if NCP rolls out its 'Big Brother' scheme. 

The car park giant plans to check drivers' images against a database it will build up of car crime suspects. 

It has yet to reveal details of how the database will be established or what information it will contain. 

It says the pioneering system will improve security at car parks by providing a warning which will help staff to protect vehicles. 

But privacy campaigners argue the technology - which will analyse the faces of thousands of car park users every day - is too invasive and not accurate enough. 

David Page, of the No2ID group, said: 'If you are an innocent person who happens to look a bit like a criminal, I would be worried about what the response would be. 

'What would happen if you were wrongly added to this database?' 

Guy Herbert, general secretary of the group, said: 'It's overthrowing the presumption of innocence for a start. 

'How does NCP know who the car criminals are, and if someone has stolen a car as a teenager is he banned from a car park for the rest of his life? 

People like the FBI have given up on face recognition technology because it is inadequate.'

Facial recognition is so much fun!!! Yay thats me on the screen!!! ME!!!! Me getting beat on the ground!!! Yippie!!! Who would have thought I can upload a picture to facebook!!! HIGH FKN TECH!!! IF you're happy and you know it, smile for the vending machine camera.
The world's first vending machine that serves you if you smile has been unveiled — and it could be heading to Australia.

The interactive machines have a digital screen embedded with a "smile-o-meter" that uses facial recognition technology.

It can even take photos and upload them to social networking site Facebook with the user's permission.

Industry experts say the initiative is a sign of how we will routinely buy convenience products in the future.

The makers of Streets ice creams, which counts Magnum, Paddle Pops and classic Golden Gaytimes among its products, have expressed interest in trialling the revolutionary development.

Parent company Unilever, which recently demonstrated the interactive vending machine to advertising executives, plans to test the machines in select countries later this year.

The touch-screen trial model rewards users with a free ice cream after checking the size of their smile.

Depending on the success of the pilot, Unilever will consider investing further in the technology and charging the same prices as other convenience outlets.

Streets marketing director Andrea Martens said the technology was exciting.

"It's a whole new way for consumers to purchase products that's interactive and really fun and we think there's a great future for innovations like this," Ms Martens said.

"The new smile-activated ice cream vending machine is a fantastic concept, and it would be great to see one in Australia.

"As you can imagine it's highly sought after and a lot of other countries are keen to get hold of one, but Streets would love to give ice cream-loving Aussies the opportunity to try it out, so we've definitely put our hand up."
