Robots to replace children in schools soon!!! >>>REAL<<<

Robots help sick kids go to school

Children too sick to go to school are still getting an education--thanks to robots in the classroom that transmit lessons back to the student.

Stepan Supin, 12, of Moscow has been battling leukemia for two years, and his immune system is so weak he can't leave home. However, telepresence technology allows him to go to school via remote-controlled robot.

The R.BOT 100 was developed by Moscow's 3Detection Labs several years ago, and it's been helping Stepan study history, geography, and languages since September.

Priced at roughly $3,000, the R.BOT 100 moves around on a wheeled base and has a display, Web cam, microphone, speakers, and an Internet link so Stepan can interact with his classmates and teacher.

"I can change the robot's speed, to go slower or faster. I can move his head to look left or right. I really feel as if I am in the classroom," Stepan told Australia's Herald Sun.

In Texas, Lyndon Baty also goes to school through a robot surrogate. He suffers from polycystic kidney disease and has a severely impaired immune system, which confines him to home.

Lyndon attends class with the Vgo telepresence robot, which was released last year by Vgo Communications. With two-way video, audio, and a 10-hour battery, Vgo lets Lyndon roam around the halls of Knox City High School and interact with other students (see the video below).

"I never thought when I was sick that I would ever have any interaction, much less this kind. It is just like I am there in the classroom," Lyndon said.

Priced around $6,000, the Vgo is much cheaper than Anybots' QB robot. With more and more telepresence bots coming out, will they become as common and cheap as laptops? If so, getting that magical doctor's note that lets you stay home might not mean too much anymore.

360 cameras in your bedroom if you want a university degree

Exams come to the bedroom with new invigilation software

New technology allows students to sit tests at home while computer lock, webcam and microphone ensure they can't cheat

Exam technique: Hundreds of students may no longer have to sit an exam together. Photograph: Rui Vieira/PAIt has long been said that exams should be sat in comfort – in loose-fitting clothing and with a glass of water handy.

Now scientists have taken this a step further and found a way for students to take tests from their bedrooms at any time of day or night.

At least one UK university – the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff – is experimenting with the technology, which has built in anti-cheating software, and dozens of others will be offered the service this summer. It has been developed by the US firm Software Secure Inc and works through a unit that students plug into their computers.

Once a student feels ready to sit the written exam, the technology takes a fingerprint to check their identity and a 360-degree webcam and microphone kick into action. Throughout the exam, these pick up whether the student is trying to cheat by receiving help from others. The computer also "locks down" so that the student cannot search the internet or their files for answers.

University invigilators can then watch the footage, whenever they choose to. Some may decide to watch each individual student taking their exam, while others will only view a sample of candidates, or speed through the footage to check nothing looks suspicious.

The technology, called Securexam Remote Proctor, is already used by New York University's law faculty, the University of West Alabama and other US institutions. It will be offered to universities later this month at an international plagiarism conference hosted by Northumbria University.

The University of Wales Institute, Cardiff is already looking into using the technology for its overseas students.

Studense to get RFID'd at North Arizona University

05/17/2010

READ MORE @ INSIDE TECHNOLOGY SPECTRUM
I must admit that on more than one occasion, I cut some of my university classes, which on retrospect, may not have been for the best of reasons. Since class attendance itself didn't count towards my grades, the only penalty I incurred was if I couldn't understand later what had been taught during the lecture. Some classes you didn't dare cut for that very reason.

At Northern Arizona University (NAU) in Flagstaff, Arizona, the administration has instructed that next semester professors should seriously consider counting class attendance  as part of the course grade for their freshman and sophomore classes, says this Arizona Republic article.

The administration's reasoning is that students who attend classes and participate are generally more successful than those that don't. The administration says that it wants to reduce the drop-out rate of the university's lower classman, and cites various statistics to back up its objectives.

The fuss about attendance would probably not be a news item except that NAU intends to use RFID proximity card readers to automatically take attendance in classes of 50 or more freshman and sophomore students. NAU has used RFID-enabled student ID cards for years to allow its students access to their resident halls, purchase meals on campus, etc. In smaller freshman and sophomore classes, the professors would manually take class attendance.

Many NAU students don't like the idea, and some privacy advocates have expressed reservations, too.

Robot teachers a go go in Korea

From Popular science shills

A shortage of English teachers has compelled South Korea to take the next logical step and plan a $45 million rollout of robotic teaching assistants. That official go-ahead follows several months of robot trials, io9 says based on Korean news reports. But the idea of replacing old fashioned human English teachers has already stirred much debate.

The robotic teachers would deploy in 500 preschools by 2011, and 8,000 preschools and kindergartens by 2013. In the short run, that could help address the lack of English teachers in rural areas or remote islands. Learning English represents a necessary educational step for competitive South Korean students, and especially those aiming to study abroad at major universities in the U.S.

But South Korean robotics experts have already begun predicting that the bots could replace more than 30,000 native English teachers in Korea's language institutes within the not-so distant future, according to the Korea Times. Most of those teachers hail from the U.S., Canada, UK and Australia.

Puppet leader, warns against self-expression on the internet

09/11/2009

Following in the footsteps of George W. Bush (who after the september 11th attacks reminded us not to "believe crazy conspiracy theories" about the events of that day), Obama has done his part by offering a warning to students in that they should self-censor in their online activities or suffer the ambiguous social consequences.

Obama recently gave a speech to a group of students in Arlington Virginia in which he had this to say:

The president said:
"First of all, I want everybody here to be careful about what you post on Facebook, because in the YouTube age whatever you do, it will be pulled up again later somewhere in your life,"

Obama insists that the youngsters be reserved in what they post on facebook, as it may come back to "haunt" them in the future, implying that potential employers may sleuth their profile, find something taboo, and thus deny them a shot at being their bitch.

This is apart of a covert movement aimed at suppressing and minimize the exhange of ideas on the internet. Many mainstream media reports have published similiar pieces which warn about the risks of online disclosure and transparency, constantly encouraging us to be concientious in our posts for the sake of our future.

Obamas message will be recieved by most people as constructive advice, and in practical terms it is a welcome suggestion. Yet for people who read between the lines the message is clear. If you say, do or think anything unconventional; if you decide to genuinely exercise your freedom to express yourself, society will retaliate against you. You will be punished. So police yourself. Restrain yourself.

In delegating the surveillance duties of big brother to the populous at large, more resources can be freed up for false flag terrorism, hollywood propaganda and controlled opposition. Yum!!!

SO DONT BE FOOLED!
Obamas concern isn't the half naked drunken photos of you and your friends on facebook (as thats the cue of normalcy and complacency to most western employers) his focus rather is on the preservation of the status quo; the same one that damns him to be nothing more than a house slave commissioned to give bad news that appears good.

Read here for an example of how the stuff you do on the internet can come back and haunt you in the future. The message is clear, STFU and get back to school!!!
