Twitter brings location-tracking tool into mix with acquisition of Mixer Labs SAN FRANCISCO -

Twitter is buying a startup called Mixer Labs in an effort to pinpoint the locations of people posting short messages on its service.

Financial terms of the deal announced Wednesday weren't disclosed.

Mixer Labs, founded by a couple of former Google employees, developed a location-tracking tool called GeoAPI.

Twitter CEO Evan Williams thinks GeoAPI could prove helpful by showing where people are as they share what they are seeing or experiencing.

About 58 million people around the world use Twitter, which accommodates messages of no more than 140 characters.

Twitter, based in San Francisco, has raised about US$155 million from investors since its 2006 inception.

Internet censorship has been widely protested by Australians on the internet for some time. The idea that one can use the internet to compromise the status quo is a myth perpetuated since the technologies onset to garnish the illusion of democracy. Even if Australia hadnt censored the internet, what progressive social change has come by way of the internet anyway? What (if any) pittance of liberty and freedumb has been salvaged using this lipid breeding physical trap that has actually significantally increased social progress asides from organizing protests which conveniently get broken up by the authorities who use it to monitor every thing you do?

NOTHING. Facebook groups with 2 million members cant even convince the social monitoring service to give them colored profiles much less stop a fucking war. Dont give me that "it makes people more aware BS"!!! It makes them think they are more aware. Thats its role. AND EVEN IF IT DID MAKE PEOPLE MORE AWARE WHAT HAS THAT AMOUNTED TO IN THE REAL WORLD? The global injustices that we have attempted to remedy using the internet have only worsened since its inception... exponentially. Wealth discrepancies the world over are as wide as ever, imperialism continues undeterred and in many cases it has accelerated, police state crackdowns, banking fraud, corporate greed, they all have increased. Everything that should be better has gotten worse!!!

NOTHING has been done asides from getting people scared shitless of the shadowy powers that be, while subtley acclimatizing them to the ideology of these very people... Getting them used to the idea... They sold us the illusion of internet freedom, they perpetuated this myth with their independent media shills, who constantly remind us that the internet is empowering the lower classes. How could we have been so foolish? It isnt empowering, it is controlling. Now people are going to waste their time challenging the Australian legislation using the same medium of communication that couldnt prevent it from taking shape in the first place!!!

Australian Gov't Approves Internet Censorship Plan

Critics, including Google, Electronic Frontiers Australia and Greens communications argue that the censorship policy is fundamentally flawed and the trial results are not surprising.

Stephen Conroy, Australia's Communications Minister, will introduce legislation just before next year's elections designed to force ISPs to block a blacklist of refused classification, or "RC" websites for all Australians using the Internet.

What will be Blocked? The blacklist would be comprised of material that includes illicit child photos, violence and other criminal activity and would be compiled using complaints from the public, government censors and URLs that are provided internationally.

It's unknown what specifically would be blocked and who decides the fate of web sites. What is known is that such blocking will not reduce performance: results of ISP-level Internet studies found that blocking banned material "can be done with 100 percent accuracy and negligible impact on Internet speed." First commercial 3-D bio-printer makes human tissue and organs

Invetech, an innovator in new product development and custom automation for the biomedical, industrial and consumer markets, today announced that it has delivered the world's first production model 3D bio-printer to Organovo, developers of the proprietary NovoGen bioprinting technology. Organovo will supply the units to research institutions investigating human tissue repair and organ replacement.

Dr. Fred Davis, president of Invetech, which has offices in San Diego and Melbourne, said, “Building human organs cell-by-cell was considered science fiction not that long ago. Through this clever combination of technology and science we have helped Organovo develop an instrument that will improve people’s lives, making the regenerative medicine that Organovo provides accessible to people around the world.”

Keith Murphy, CEO of Organovo, based in San Diego, said the units represent a breakthrough because they provide for the first time a flexible technology platform for organizations working on many different types of tissue construction and organ replacement.

”Scientists and engineers can use the 3-D bio printers to enable placing cells of almost any type into a desired pattern in 3-D,” said Murphy. “Researchers can place liver cells on a preformed scaffold, support kidney cells with a co-printed scaffold, or form adjacent layers of epithelial and stromal soft tissue that grow into a mature tooth. Ultimately the idea would be for surgeons to have tissue on demand for various uses, and the best way to do that is get a number of bio-printers into the hands of researchers and give them the ability to make three dimensional tissues on demand.”

The 3-D bio-printers include an intuitive software interface that allows engineers to build a model of the tissue construct before the printer commences the physical constructions of the organs cell-by-cell using automated, laser-calibrated print heads.
