Antidepressants in water don't make happier fish!

FROM CTV NEWS

Are Prozac-popping fish present in St. Lawrence River?

MONTREAL — The fish swimming through waterways around big cities could be subjected to doses of humans' "happy hormone," a new study suggests.

Significant quantities of anti-depressants are finding their way into the water around Montreal and affecting the fishes' tissue and brain activity, says Dr. Sebastien Sauve, the study's lead researcher.

He said the phenomenon detected in the St-Lawrence River likely exists around other cities, and called for more research into the long-term ecological effects of of fish being stuffed with anti-depressants.

The controlled study involved brook trout exposed to varying amounts of effluent Montreal water over a three-month period.

Sauve, who works in the Universite de Montreal's chemistry department, said researchers measured a biomarker -- a synapse activity in the brain tissue -- and there was a clear reduction in that activity from the fish being exposed to wastewater.

"We have data that does show that anti-depressant drugs do accumulate in fish tissues -- there's significantly more in the liver than in the muscle but there's also more in the brain tissues," Sauve told The Canadian Press.

"This (the brain) is a bit more of a cause for concern because we have a molecule that's known and used for brain alteration functions in humans, so if we do have an accumulation in fish brain, it raises a question of what the impact is on the fish."

Sauve said the study revealed that ozone treatment reduces the level of antidepressants in the wastewater as it leaves the plant. Montreal is experimenting with that kind of treatment.

The study shows the phenomenon is likely found around many cities in the world because Montreal has a typical sewage-treatment system.

But the structure of that type of medication makes it difficult to remove its traces, even with a high-tech treatment facility, Sauve noted.

Carbon capture to foul what remains

What if Captured Carbon Makes a Getaway?
By FELICITY BARRINGER

The political clout of the fossil-fuel industries was driven home this year with the death of cap-and-trade legislation in Congress. Among those flexing their muscles was the coal industry, which is responsible for more than 45 percent of the country’s generating capacity.

Kevin Riddell for The New York Times

The AEP Mountaineer plant in New Haven, W.Va., which boasts new coal capture technology.
In August, the Department of Energy reported that coal-fired power generation was up 8.7 percent from a year earlier. Total generation rose somewhat less, about 7.4 percent. In the short term, at least, the more power we use, the greater the proportion will be coming from coal.

One leading solution to the problem to the fossil fuel emissions generated by a coal-fired plant is injecting it into underground storage areas thousands of feet below the surface, a technology known as carbon capture and sequestration. The Energy Department announced this summer that it would finance 15 separate projects to develop iterations of this technology.

But the technology may hold some unwelcome surprises if the carbon dioxide finds its way out and up to groundwater aquifers, a new study by Duke University researchers indicates. It could react with minerals there and increase levels of pollutants, perhaps so much that federal regulators would deem the water undrinkable, experiments suggest.

Two researchers took samples of dry sediments from groundwater aquifers that sit above likely sites for carbon storage in eastern Maryland, Virginia, northern Texas and Illinois and exposed them to a steady stream of carbon dioxide.

“The chemical composition of our groundwater experiments was significantly affected by the addition of CO2,” wrote the authors, Mark G. Little of Duke’s Center on Global Change and Robert B. Jackson, a biologist with the Nicholas School of the Environment. The hypothetical “groundwater” in the experiments became more acidic, which in turn had the effect of dissolving some of the minerals in the sediments.

Shell to get 865 million to prolong market petro-complex

10/19/2009

This is by far the dumbest thing I have ever heard since... today. The companies that have dominated your lives by impeding the natural progression of scientific advancement throughout the years, while forcing you to burn up your credit on that which veils your multicellular nature are now dodging any responsibility for the consequences by being subsidized by you; the alienated fucktard, so to perpetuate this criminal model of development well into the future that awaits only rich people.

Instead of paying down a chunk of everyones student loan, or using that money to fund developing countries, maybe even healthcare, or perhaps even researching ALTERNATIVE sources of energy we are INSTEAD going to give it to these criminals all under the sacred guise of healing the earth... Please wake up now.

Or (DING DING DING!!!) just keep on thinking that someone up there gives a shit about YOU, and that

Shell gets $865M for carbon capture
By Dave Cooper and Lisa Schmidt, Canwest News Service
October 8, 2009

Shell Canada was first out of the gate in the carbon-capture effort Thursday, winning pledges of $865 million in aid from the federal and Alberta governments for its Quest pilot project.

The funding would cover nearly two-thirds of the project's estimated $1.35-billion cost, which critics called a subsidy for one of the world's largest energy companies.

But Alberta Energy Minister Mel Knight defended the expense on Thursday, saying government must play a role in helping develop the technology.

"We will not drive the cost of CCS (carbon-capture-and-storage) or any other carbon mitigation down without pursuing some of this technology," he said at a news conference.

"We realize at this point it's expensive. . . . We believe that these types of projects will drive the cost down and make this thing economic."

Alberta has signed a letter of intent to provide $745 million in funding for the Quest CCS project over the next 15 years. Ottawa is also contributing $120 million toward the project through its Clean Energy Fund.

Global warming distraction/ Dec 20th, 2008

Millions of libertarian activists persist in wasting their timecards protesting the concept of global warming, which is an effectively distractive debate which has been devised in order to distract people away from the fact that we don’t need oil anyway… Global Warming deniers righteously insist, and in a misguided renegade haste, that humans are not causing the rise in CO2. They use this as a foundation for their rightful challenging of the proposed carbon tax, which they insist is another mechanism of social control, while inadvertently supporting the idea of the free market. Although it is true that trying to regulate peoples behavior will never diminish the underlying problem of greed. However in partaking in this distraction their efforts are leeched by right wing corporate ass whores who think that in discounting the theory of what’s causing global warming it completely makes up for things like:

Oil spills, resource extraction practices, legitimates consumerism, biomagnifications of toxicants in our foods, sedimentation, over fishing, destruction of wildlife’s natural habitats, toxic waste from industry, consumption based waste, depleting forest which absorb CO2, non-renewable resources which are being extracted, soil erosion, extinct species and shrinking species diversity, contamination of waterways, pollution, genetically modified food nutrient deficiencies and the ecological imbalances they create ETC.

Nonetheless they are expected to carry on playing into the debate which seeks to focalize ecological efforts on worrying about being taxed, because that’s what they have been conditioned to care about, money and self-preservation! Instead of these VERY REAL ecological threats which we are currently facing, they focus on the one which seek to compromise the fake money in their pocketbooks.
