Antidepressants in water don't make happier fish!

Are Prozac-popping fish present in St. Lawrence River?

MONTREAL — The fish swimming through waterways around big cities could be subjected to doses of humans' "happy hormone," a new study suggests.

Significant quantities of anti-depressants are finding their way into the water around Montreal and affecting the fishes' tissue and brain activity, says Dr. Sebastien Sauve, the study's lead researcher.

He said the phenomenon detected in the St-Lawrence River likely exists around other cities, and called for more research into the long-term ecological effects of of fish being stuffed with anti-depressants.

The controlled study involved brook trout exposed to varying amounts of effluent Montreal water over a three-month period.

Sauve, who works in the Universite de Montreal's chemistry department, said researchers measured a biomarker -- a synapse activity in the brain tissue -- and there was a clear reduction in that activity from the fish being exposed to wastewater.

"We have data that does show that anti-depressant drugs do accumulate in fish tissues -- there's significantly more in the liver than in the muscle but there's also more in the brain tissues," Sauve told The Canadian Press.

"This (the brain) is a bit more of a cause for concern because we have a molecule that's known and used for brain alteration functions in humans, so if we do have an accumulation in fish brain, it raises a question of what the impact is on the fish."

Sauve said the study revealed that ozone treatment reduces the level of antidepressants in the wastewater as it leaves the plant. Montreal is experimenting with that kind of treatment.

The study shows the phenomenon is likely found around many cities in the world because Montreal has a typical sewage-treatment system.

But the structure of that type of medication makes it difficult to remove its traces, even with a high-tech treatment facility, Sauve noted.

Vaccines could help what's ailing fish
October 22, 2010

U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) scientists are developing vaccines to help protect healthy farm-raised catfish against key diseases.

Working as a team, microbiologist Phillip H. Klesius and molecular biologists Julia Pridgeon and Craig Shoemaker with USDA's Agricultural Research Service (ARS) at the agency's Aquatic Animal Health Research Unit in Auburn, Ala., and Joyce J. Evans, aquatic pathologist at the Auburn unit's lab in Chestertown, Md., are developing vaccines against Streptococcus iniae, S. agalactiae and other pathogens.

ARS is USDA's principal intramural scientific research agency. This research supports the USDA priority of promoting international food security.

The scientists modify the genetic makeup of pathogens to make them nonvirulent, and then develop vaccines that expose fish to low doses of the modified forms of the pathogens.

Klesius and Pridgeon have developed a modified live S. iniae vaccine that appears to be superior to inactivated or killed vaccines. The live modified vaccine has enough similarity with the pathogen to create a lifelong immunity in fish, according to Klesius.

Scientists are looking at new methods to vaccinate fish. But for now, the vaccination process consists of immersing the fish in water that contains the modified pathogen.

Previous research breakthroughs have benefited the catfish industry. For example, a ARS-developed vaccine against the pathogen Edwardsiella ictaluri, which causes enteric septicemia, has been widely adopted by fish growers.

FROM NEWS AU

TINKER with the genetics of salmon and maybe you create a revolutionary new food source that could help the environment and feed the hungry.

Or m
aybe you're creating what some say is an untested "frankenfish" that could cause unknown allergic reactions and the eventual decimation of the wild salmon population.

The US Food and Drug Administration hears both arguments this week when it begins a two-day meeting on whether to approve the marketing of the genetically engineered fish, which would be the first such animal approved for human consumption.

The agency has already said the salmon, which grows twice as fast as conventional salmon, is as safe to eat as the traditional variety.

Approval of the salmon would open the door for a variety of other genetically engineered animals, including an environmentally friendly pig that is being developed in Canada or cattle that are resistant to mad cow disease.

From futurity

Why would fish follow a robot?Researchers at NYU built silent, remotely controlled, fish-like robotic swimmers that fit in the palm of a hand. These early designs can "swim" along a plane; the next step is to create robots that can dive and surface. Since fish of different sizes and species school together, engineer Maurizio Porfiri correctly hypothesized that they would not only accept a robotic peer that was larger than themselves but also welcome it as a group leader. (

NYU (US)--Forget artificial intelligence. How about artificial leadership? A mechanical engineer at New York University is combining smart materials and mathematics to build robots that lead schooling fish.

Someday, Maurizio Porfiri, assistant professor of mechanical engineering atNYU’s Polytechnic Institute, hopes the robots could lead fish away from the turbines of power plants. They also could potentially lead flocking birds to new wintering grounds if their forests have been destroyed, or even herd humans to safety when a fire breaks out.

First, however, engineers must uncover the mechanics of leadership for each of these life forms.

Porfiri chose to start with the bait fish swimming in his tanks because their information-sharing is particularly rich: They make their decision on whether to school based upon what they see and the flow that they feel, which can be studied using fluid dynamics.

Fish leaders, according to published report and to Porfiri’s observations, beat their tails faster, mill about, and accelerate to gain attention, gather a school, and lead it.

Using a shallow, donut-shaped tank and cameras, researchers began a mathematical journey into fish schooling in one-dimensional environments. They recently reported their results from this study in the Journal of the Royal Society Interface.

Meanwhile, they built silent, remotely controlled, fish-like robotic swimmers that fit in the palm of a hand. These first robots can “swim” along a plane; the next step is to create robots that can dive and surface.
