Mass tree deaths prompt fears of Amazon 'climate tipping point'
Scientists fear billions of tree deaths caused by 2010 drought could see vast forest turn from carbon sink to carbon source

Billions of trees died in the record drought that struck the Amazon in 2010, raising fears that the vast forest is on the verge of a tipping point, where it will stop absorbing greenhouse gas emissions and instead increase them.

The dense forests of the Amazon soak up more than one-quarter of the world's atmospheric carbon, making it a critically important buffer against global warming. But if the Amazon switches from a carbon sink to a carbon source that prompts further droughts and mass tree deaths, such a feedback loop could cause runaway climate change, with disastrous consequences.

"Put starkly, current emissions pathways risk playing Russian roulette with the world's largest forest," said tropical forest expert Simon Lewis, at the University of Leeds, and who led the research published today in the journal Science. Lewis was careful to note that significant scientific uncertainties remain and that the 2010 and 2005 drought – thought then to be of once-a-century severity – might yet be explained by natural climate variation.

"We can't just wait and see because there is no going back," he said. "We won't know we have passed the point where the Amazon turns from a sink to a source until afterwards, when it will be too late."

Alex Bowen, from the London School of Economics and Political Science's Grantham research institute on climate change, said huge emissions of carbon from the Amazon would make it even harder to keep global greenhouse gases at a low enough level to avoid dangerous climate change. "It therefore makes it even more important for there to be strong and urgent reductions in man-made emissions."

Here is a paradox for those trying to save the rainforests. Reducing the rate of deforestation often makes the number of forest fires go up. Yes, up.

The finding came from a study of satellite images of Amazonia by Luiz Aragão of the University of Exeter, UK, and Yosio Shimabukuro at the National Institute of Space Research in São Paulo, Brazil (Science, vol 328, p 1275). Pristine forests and farmed areas are largely fire-free. But fires proliferate in half-destroyed forests, where traditional farmers practice slash-and-burn farming in clearings.

This is just the kind of forest that appears to have benefited from recent Brazilian efforts to reduce the rate of forest loss in the Amazon. The study found that 59 per cent of forest areas where deforestation rates dropped between 2000 and 2007 have more fires than they did before. This is more than a statistical quirk, say the authors.

Afterthoughts...
Nature indeed will adapt to whatever circumstances and abuse we put it through, its humans we are trying to save, and what conservatives do is overlook the fact that they ARE nature, libs tend to just want to SAVE nature and not humans, there is an in between. Thanks to shorter winters the pine beetles have devoured the trees in the west, which makes for an unnatural amount of fires, which makes for lack of water in the soil, which makes for more heat, erosion, and the cycle continues until we are sweltering in piss hot 50 degree heat. Indeed fires cant spread as far if there is a clearcut between two stands, BUT THERE AINT NO FOREST THERE NEITHER!!! Thats what they overlook in this article. Selective cutting and not clear-cutting like we do here, is a good way around this, although its far more expensive, and what rich cunthead really wants to heli a tree 5 miles for Walmart flyers and the Chinese furniture when you can take 50 hectares as long as you replace it with fake trees and pesticides to make sure nothing else survives. These mothersuckers are braindead scum, the foresters out there are halfwits and 90% of the environmentalists are serving the agenda of the elites by chasing fkn ghosts like global warming YAY lets die for the rich!!!
